Movistar Roaming: Frequently asked questions, rates and roaming map.

Keep using your mobile when you are abroad

Frequent questions:

What is it and what advantages does it offer you?

1. What is Roaming? What advantages does it offer you?
Roaming is the service that allows your mobile contract or card line to be used when you travel outside of Spain. That is, thanks to the Roaming service you will be connected when you are abroad so that:

• Make or receive calls to any fixed or mobile number.
• Send or receive short or multimedia messages.
• Browse the internet, download videos, applications, use WhatsApp or use your email.

2. What management and information services?
When you travel abroad you will have the following information and management services at your disposal:
• When you arrive in a new country and your mobile is registered to the network, we will inform you via short message of the prices that will apply in that country taking into account the rates you have contracted, information on the data consumption limit that you have established as well such as utility telephones (consulted, emergencies ...) in case you need them during your stay.
• Receive assistance through 1004. Remember that these calls have the cost of a call to Spain made from the country where you are. In some networks it may be necessary to dial these numbers in international format: +34 699 99 1004.

How does it work:

1. How do I know if I have the Roaming service activated?
If you are a Movistar Card customer, you have activated the service from the moment you register the line.

Anyway, we recommend that you consult the Mi Movistar app or call us to ensure that you have the service activated regardless of the country you are going to visit.

2. Do I have to dial the +34 prefix every time I call from abroad?
Movistar allows you to use your mobile phone as if you were in Spain, that is, you do not need to dial the +34 prefix to call Spain and you can dial Movistar's own short numbers such as 1004 or 123.

However, if due to limitations of the visited network, it is not possible to make calls without a prefix, you must dial:
• If you are a contract customer: international exit code "00" or '+' sign followed by the country code and the landline or mobile phone number. For example, if you call Spain: 0034 699 99 1004 or +34 699 99 1004.
• If you are a card customer: * 100 * followed by the fixed or mobile number. Finally, dial "#". For example if you call Spain: * 100 * 699 99 10 04 # or * 100 * + 34 699 99 10 04 #.

3. How can I connect to the Internet abroad?
When you travel abroad you can connect to the Internet as if you were in Spain. You can download your email, visit web pages and use the applications on your smartphone.

In addition, with the Roaming Data Consumption Control service you can control your mobile Internet spending when you travel with a default monthly limit of € 50 (€ 60.5 with VAT). Once this limit is exceeded, your connection will be interrupted so you do not spend more.

4. Can I block Internet use abroad?
Yes, you can block Internet use abroad without affecting the phone's ability to call and receive calls or to send and receive SMS.

Most phones allow you to block the use of data abroad from the "Settings" option of your mobile. Check your phone manual and call us at 1004 if you have any questions.

5. How can I prevent my phone from connecting to another network when I am in border areas?
In border areas when the phone loses coverage of the Movistar network, an attempt is made to automatically register with a foreign network that does have coverage in that area. To prevent this from happening, you can configure in the "Settings" option of your phone that the mobile network selection is "Manual". In this case, when you lose Movistar coverage, the phone will present the available networks on the screen for you to select the one you want. Until you confirm the registration in the selected network, the phone will not be operational for calls, messages or data.

For more security, on the screen of your mobile (usually in the upper left), the name of the operator that is giving you the service at that moment will always appear.

What I need: Requirements and incompatibilities
1. Does any mobile work in Roaming?
Most of the mobiles are compatible with the Roaming service since they have various frequency bands that guarantee their operation in networks of other operators in the world.

However, there are older or simpler mobiles that are only 2G compatible and exclusively use the frequencies used by mobile operators in Europe for this technology. These mobiles may not work in operators of certain destinations in America, Korea and Japan mainly. If you are going to travel to these destinations and you have doubts that your mobile phone works in these countries, call us at 1004 to consult us.

2. Is my calling plan or Internet flat rate from Spain abroad compatible?
No, when you travel to any foreign country, Roaming rates apply. You can check them at www.movistar.es/particulares/movil/llamadas-internacionales/.

Travel to a country of the European Union:

How much does it cost: Prices and invoice
If your trip includes any country in the European Union, Iceland, Lietchestein or Norway, you can speak, send messages or use data as if you were in Spain. That is, the prices and conditions will be the same as those of your national rate, both in Contract and Card. Calls or SMS to any other country outside the European Union, Iceland, Lietchestein or Norway are excluded. For more info, visit www.movistar.es/particulares/movil/viajar-al-extranjero-roaming

Calls or SMS made from Spain to any country in the world are also excluded. To know the current rates, visit www.movistar.es/particulares/movil/tarifas-moviles/tarifas-internacionales

Travel to a country outside the European Union

How much does it cost: Prices and invoice
If, on the other hand, you are going to travel outside the European Union, prices will depend on each country. You can check all the Movistar Roaming rates at:

Do I pay for the calls I receive when I am abroad?
When you are abroad, you pay for both the calls you make and the calls you receive. The person who calls you from Spain will pay the price of a normal call since they do not have to know that you are in another country.

Do I pay for the SMS or MMS that I receive when I am abroad?
No, the SMS and MMS you receive when you are abroad are free for you.

Which roaming operator has the cheapest rates?
Roaming rates do not depend on the operator you connect to, but on the country you travel to. You can check all the Movistar Roaming rates at:

http://www.movistar.es/particulares/movil/viajar-al-extranjero-roaming/.

How can I control my Internet spending when I am abroad?
If you are a Contract, the Roaming Data Consumption Control service allows you to control your monthly data expense (Internet) when you are abroad. You can set an Informational or Restrictive limit. In both cases you will receive a free SMS when you reach 80% and 100% of the established limit. If it is Restrictive, in addition, the Roaming data service will be suspended so that your spending does not increase. By default, we provide you with a restrictive monthly limit of 50 euros (60.5 with VAT).

If you want to continue connecting to the Internet once the service is suspended, you can do so by sending an SMS with the word "NAVIGATE" to 223570 or by calling the number +34 696 22 35 70, thus setting the limit as Informative. You can also manage the service by calling 223570 toll free or +34 696 22 35 70.
